Fiber in Red Wing is in its beginning stages of development. A fiber infrastructure is important to the community because it will:

• Give local businesses a competitive edge.
• Enhance residents’ quality of life by expanding education, healthcare and recreational services.
• Provide ubiquitous and affordable coverage to all areas of Red Wing for television, internet and telephone service.

The Red Wing City Council has requested the Red Wing Port Authority research what other communities are doing, collect information about potential options and present it to the council. The Port Authority created a special committee called the Fiber Task Force to research various aspects of fiber optic broadband.

Red Wing’s Fiber Task Force has been meeting since 2005. Its research, findings and opinions on fiber optic broadband for Red Wing can be found in its recently published newsletter. The work of the task force will continue as Red Wing considers implementing high-speed internet access through fiber deployment.
